Last day at Glacier NP

Glacier National Park

From Banff, we hopped on the highway and immediately missed an exit or two and got lost in Calgary.  Eventually we made it out and after a long stop, courtesy of the US Border Patrol, we arrived at our rental house on the edge of Glacier National Park.  We were pretty tired from driving and spent the rest of the day lounging, before heading into the park the following morning.

The next morning, Sherlock stayed at home as we followed the famous Going-To-The-Sun road through the heart of the park.  We pulled over early for a quick walk near the visitor center and the trail led us to Hidden Lake but was completely snow covered.  Julie, Marty, and Caroline decided against the slippery walk up the side of a mountain and stayed behind.

After letting our feet dry, we heard of some waterfalls nearby so we kept driving west across the park to a new trailhead.  During this leg, a mountain lion briefly ran in front of our car.  Katie and I got a great view of it before it disappeared off the side of the road.  We didn’t even have time for a picture.

We found the trailhead easily enough and took the short walk up to Avalanche Lake where we had views of the seven waterfalls that fed into the lake.

After this hike, Katie and I headed onward to get more scenic photos of the park while the rest of our party started making their way back to our rental house.  We followed the Going-To-The-Sun road until we met Lake McDonald on the west side of the park.

The next day, Marty and Caroline started early with a bit of kayaking on nearby Swiftcurrent Lake.  Katie, Julie, Chris, and I slept in and met up with them later in the morning before we did the last hike of our trip.  Once again, Sherlock was relieved to be left at home and not walking all day.  We ended the day with some grilling at our rental house and early the next morning we started the long drive back to Salt Lake City.
